FiiO JH5: Hybrid IEM Technology at an Accessible Price
The FiiO JH5 is a collaborative project between FiiO and Jade Audio, delivering a five-driver hybrid in-ear monitor at a highly competitive price point. Sitting firmly within FiiO's entry-level IEM range, the JH5 punches well above its price bracket by pairing a carbon-fibre dynamic driver with four custom-designed balanced armature drivers in a three-way crossover configuration.
Driver Configuration and Technology
At the heart of the JH5 is a 1 dynamic + 4 balanced armature (1DD + 4BA) hybrid driver design. The single dynamic driver uses a carbon-based diaphragm for controlled, natural bass reproduction, whilst the four balanced armatures are custom units developed in-house by FiiO, inspired by the drivers found in the higher-end FH7 and FH9 flagship models. Two of the balanced armatures handle the midrange frequencies, and the remaining two are positioned close to the nozzle to manage treble and air extension. The result is a coherent three-way crossover with three independent driver chambers for better separation between frequency bands.
Build Quality and Design
The JH5 shell is constructed to resemble a custom in-ear monitor (CIEM) in form, with ergonomic grooves and curves that suit most ear shapes without feeling bulky. The black variant features an opaque shell that becomes semi-translucent under light, revealing the internal driver arrangement and chambers. A polished faceplate adds a shimmering finish that distinguishes the JH5 from its more utilitarian rivals.
Cable and Accessories
The included stock cable is a high-purity silver-plated copper wire with a four-strand Litz braid construction, comprising 392 individually insulated wires in total. The cable terminates with a standard 3.5mm single-ended 3.5mm jack and connects to the shells via 0.78mm 2-pin connectors. The cable quality is genuinely impressive for the price point and most users will find no reason to replace it. Accessories include a selection of eartips to achieve the best fit and seal, alongside a compact carry pouch.
Sound Character
The JH5 delivers a well-balanced, laid-back presentation. Bass is controlled and natural, with the dynamic driver providing genuine sub-bass extension without bleeding into the mids. The midrange is forward and musically satisfying, with thick note weight that suits vocals and acoustic instruments. Treble is present and extended to 40kHz, providing detail retrieval and air without sibilance. At 13 ohms impedance and 111dB/mW sensitivity, the JH5 is easy to drive from any smartphone, portable DAP, or dongle DAC without needing a dedicated amplifier.
