The FiiO FT7 is FiiO's flagship open-back planar magnetic headphone, representing the culmination of lessons learnt across the FT1, FT3, and FT5 models. Designed to compete with headphones at significantly higher price points, the FT7 pairs precision engineering with premium materials to deliver a listening experience that sets a new benchmark for the brand.
Design and Build
The FT7's driver assembly features a 106mm proprietary planar magnetic transducer with a 1 micron ultra-thin film membrane, coated using FiiO's patent-pending Gold and Silver Precious Metal Multi-Layer Coating Technology. Each side of the driver array is supported by 18 high-quality N52 neodymium magnets arranged to produce a uniform and smooth magnetic field. The headphone's distinctive open-back grilles are crafted from Zebrawood, contributing both to acoustics and aesthetics. Ear cushions are made from a combination of lambskin and suede, and the headband is finished to a similar standard, providing a comfortable fit for extended listening sessions.
Sound and Comfort
The FT7's planar driver is capable of resolving low-level detail across an exceptionally wide frequency range, with a rated response of 5Hz to 40kHz. At 25 ohms impedance and a sensitivity of 94 dB/mW, the FT7 is relatively easy to drive for a planar magnetic headphone of this size, though it will reward pairing with a quality headphone amplifier. The open-back design provides a natural, spacious soundstage. At approximately 427g (excluding cable), the FT7 is practical for extended listening, assisted by the adjustable headband and generous ear cushion depth.
Connectivity and Accessories
The FT7 ships with a premium cable made from liquid-nitrogen-frozen single crystal copper, terminated in a 4.4mm balanced plug with a dual 3.5mm TS connection at the headphone end. Included adapters enable connection via 4-pin XLR balanced or standard 6.35mm (quarter-inch) single-ended outputs. The full package is presented in a specially designed YauLi linen storage box, making the FT7 a fitting centrepiece for a high-end personal audio system.
