The FiiO FD3 sits in the mid-range of FiiO's FD (Flagship Dynamic) line of in-ear monitors, sharing key acoustic technologies developed for the flagship FD5 while delivering them at a considerably more accessible price point. It uses a single dynamic driver architecture, relying on the quality of one well-engineered driver rather than multiple drivers to deliver its performance.
Driver and Diaphragm
At the core of the FD3 is a large 12mm dynamic driver with a full DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) diaphragm. DLC is a high-performance material valued for its combination of extreme rigidity and very low mass. In a driver diaphragm, this means reduced unwanted resonance and distortion, faster transient response, and greater control across the frequency range. The driver is paired with a powerful magnet producing a magnetic flux of 1.5 Tesla, which contributes to deep, well-controlled bass and ultra-low distortion at high frequencies. The voice coil uses an ultra-fine copper-clad aluminium Daikoku design, sourced from Japan, for efficient energy transfer and precise motion.
Acoustic Architecture
The FD3 inherits FiiO's acoustic prism technology from the flagship FD5. Positioned at the front of the cavity, the acoustic prism precisely controls how sound waves propagate within the shell, eliminating high-frequency standing waves and providing uniform wave diffusion. This results in a cleaner, more detailed high-frequency presentation with reduced time-delay colouration.
The FD3 also employs a semi-open acoustic design. This balanced-pressure approach not only produces a more natural, open-sounding presentation, but also reduces air pressure build-up against the eardrum during extended listening, making it a more comfortable choice for long sessions.
Build Quality and Design
The shell is constructed from aluminium-magnesium alloy using a five-axis CNC process followed by hand polishing. This manufacturing approach produces a lightweight yet robust housing. The faceplate features a distinctive 2.5D film-coated glass panel in a dark celluloid pattern that gives the FD3 a premium appearance. Total weight is just 7g per earpiece.
The FD3 includes interchangeable sound nozzles, a feature introduced on the flagship FD5. The two included nozzles have different inner diameters: the red nozzle (smaller inner diameter) emphasises low-frequency extension and bass weight, while the black nozzle (larger inner diameter) prioritises treble detail and air. This allows listeners to tune the sound character to their preference without changing equaliser settings.
Cable and Connectivity
The FD3 ships with a 4-strand, 120-core high-purity single-crystal copper cable with a fixed 3.5mm termination plug. The cable uses an expanded MMCX connector, which provides a secure fit and allows replacement or upgrade cables to be used. The MMCX system is a widely adopted standard, ensuring a broad range of compatible aftermarket options are available.
Accessories and Certification
The FD3 comes well equipped: the box includes three types of eartips (balanced, bass-tuned, and vocal-tuned) in small, medium, and large sizes, plus two pairs of foam tips, a carry case, a cleaning brush, an MMCX assist tool for cable removal, and one pair of interchangeable sound nozzles. The FD3 is Hi-Res Audio certified, confirming its ability to reproduce content up to and beyond 40kHz.
