The Dorpo X300 sits at the centre of Dorpo’s 8K media player range, positioned above the entry-level X3 and below the flagship UHP-3001. It is designed for enthusiasts who want to build a local digital AV library alongside access to streaming services, combining high-performance 8K decoding with a built-in storage bay for hard drives of up to 24 TB. Dorpo was founded by former OPPO Digital executives and is distributed in the UK through dorpo Digital EU Ltd, based in Chippenham, Wiltshire.
Performance and Processing
At the heart of the X300 is Amlogic’s S928X-K processor, a dedicated 8K professional chip built on 12 nm process technology with a five-core CPU architecture and 3.2 TOPS of computing power. This is paired with 6 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64 GB of eMMC internal storage, running Android 11 via Dorpo’s proprietary FunplayUI 2.0 interface. The system supports native 7680x4320 output at 60 Hz via HDMI 2.1, and handles the full range of current HDR standards: Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG. Colour depth reaches 12-bit, with BT.2020 wide colour gamut coverage.
Video codec support extends to H.265, AV1, VP9, AVS3, and AVS2 at 8K 60fps. The X300 carries both Dolby and DTS dual certification, decoding and passing through Dolby Atmos and DTS:X HD MA lossless audio formats. PCM audio output is supported up to 192 kHz. Precise frame rate matching output covers standard integer rates (24, 25, 30, 50, 60, 120 fps) as well as fractional rates including 23.976 fps and 29.97 fps, ensuring smooth playback of both film and broadcast content without frame rate conversion artefacts.
High-Fidelity Audio
For analogue audio output, the X300 integrates an AKM4432 standalone high-performance DAC, providing ultra-low-noise stereo RCA output. Measured performance includes an output level of 2.1 Vrms, a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 103 dB at 1 kHz, crosstalk better than 114 dB at 1 kHz, and a frequency response of -1 to +0.3 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Digital audio outputs are also provided via coaxial and optical (TOSLINK) connectors, supporting Dolby and DTS source code transmission and PCM up to 192 kHz.
HDD Storage Bay
A distinguishing feature of the X300 is its built-in 3.5-inch SATA 3.0 hard drive bay, located on the right side of the chassis behind a tool-free removable door. The bay supports drives up to 24 TB and is compatible with NTFS, FAT32, and exFAT file systems. The unit ships without a hard drive; a separate 3.5-inch SATA HDD is required for local storage. The drive must be formatted before use, and should only be installed or removed with the player powered off.
Connectivity and Networking
The rear panel provides a comprehensive set of connections: one HDMI 2.1 output (capable of 8K at 60 fps and 4K at 120 fps), analogue stereo RCA output, combined coaxial and optical digital audio output, one USB 3.0 port, a Gigabit Ethernet port, RS232 control, and both trigger in and trigger out connectors for integration with control systems. The front panel provides a USB 2.0 port. Network connectivity is covered by a Gigabit Ethernet interface alongside dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) with Bluetooth 5.2, using a built-in high-gain antenna.
Software and Control
The FunplayUI 2.0 Android-based interface provides a 4K-resolution navigation experience with Dorpo’s proprietary dp Player and Music Player applications. The system automatically scans and indexes local media content. As an Android 11 device, it can run third-party streaming applications including Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, YouTube, Plex, Tidal, and Spotify. The companion dp SmartController app enables remote management of multiple Dorpo devices on a local network.
The included RC05 remote control features motion-activated backlighting, IR learning capability for third-party device control, and Bluetooth connectivity. The X300 also supports HDMI CEC, RS232, IP control (via smartphone app), and trigger in/out for integration with home theatre control systems.
Design and Build
The X300 uses a half-width chassis constructed with a solid all-metal interior structure, finished to a standard suited to both dedicated home cinema and hi-fi installations. The front panel features a dot-matrix display showing time, network status, Bluetooth status, mute, and video output information, alongside a power indicator. Dimensions are 230 x 188 x 68 mm (excluding feet), and the unit runs from a 12 V DC, 3 A external power supply.
