The Dorpo DMP-A1 sits at the top of the Dorpo Digital audio range as the brand's flagship music-focused component. Where the UHP-3003 series addresses home cinema and video playback, the DMP-A1 is designed exclusively around the demands of serious music listening, combining local playback, network streaming, digital conversion, preamplification, and headphone amplification within a single aluminium chassis.
Design and Construction
The DMP-A1 is built around a thickened full aluminium alloy chassis machined with high-precision CNC equipment. The clamshell construction clamps top and bottom panels to an integrated middle frame, producing exceptional rigidity. The matte metal surface is finished to a high standard throughout, with rounded corners contributing to both the structural integrity and the overall aesthetic. A 5-inch 1080p LCD colour touchscreen dominates the front panel, offering direct interaction with the operating system and music library. Flanking the display are the headphone outputs on the left and a large volume knob on the right, the latter incorporating a customisable multi-colour LED ring known as the Smart Ring. During playback, this ring can be set to animate in time with the audio spectrum, serving as both a visual indicator and an ambient accent.
Digital Conversion
The DAC section is built around ESS Technology's flagship ES9039S Pro chip, chosen for its very low total harmonic distortion and high signal-to-noise ratio. The USB audio interface is handled by a third-generation XMOS XU316 processor, which supports native DSD512 and PCM 768kHz/32-bit over USB-B, as well as full MQA decoding in MQA, MQA Renderer, and MQA Studio formats. Optical and coaxial digital inputs support PCM 192kHz/24-bit and DSD64 via DoP.
Precise clocking is achieved through a dual-crystal design using separate 45.1584MHz and 49.152MHz oscillators to manage the 44.1kHz and 48kHz sample rate families independently, minimising jitter between the two domains.
Analogue Stage and Preamplifier
The analogue output circuit adopts a fully balanced differential amplification architecture from the DAC output through to all analogue outputs. The balanced XLR preamp delivers 4.2Vrms at 0dBFS with a THD+N figure of 0.00008% (-122dB) and a signal-to-noise ratio of 127dBr A-weighted. The RCA single-ended output provides 2.5Vrms at 0dBFS with THD+N of 0.0001% (-120dB). To avoid interference between the output stages, independent selection between XLR and RCA outputs is supported. The component selection for the analogue stage includes Nichicon and Elna capacitors, Wima capacitors, Omron relays, and high-precision resistors, together with TI OP1612 operational amplifiers.
Powering the analogue circuitry is a dedicated linear power supply, while the digital circuits are fed by a separate low-noise switching supply. Both power modules are enclosed in full metal shielding to prevent interference between the digital and analogue domains.
Headphone Amplifier
The integrated headphone amplifier offers both a 4.4mm fully balanced output and a 6.35mm single-ended output, each with high and low gain settings to accommodate headphones ranging from 16 to 300 ohms impedance. In high-gain balanced mode, the 4.4mm output delivers 4Vrms and 55mW into 300 ohms, with a SNR of 127dBr. In low-gain mode it provides 1.3Vrms and 54mW into 32 ohms. The single-ended 6.35mm output provides 2.8Vrms and 25mW into 300 ohms in high-gain mode.
Streaming and Connectivity
The DMP-A1 operates on Android 12 with Dorpo's deeply customised FunplayUI interface. Built-in streaming services include Tidal, Spotify, Qobuz, Deezer, Apple Music, Highresaudio, and Amazon Music, with additional services added via over-the-air firmware updates as certification is completed. Network streaming protocols include Roon Ready, Spotify Connect, Qobuz Connect, AirPlay, and DLNA, allowing playback to be initiated from mobile devices and desktop applications. Wireless connectivity is provided by a Wi-Fi 6 dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) module, with a gigabit Ethernet port also available.
A Qualcomm QCC5181 Bluetooth 5.4 module is included for wireless audio reception, supporting AAC, SBC, and additional codecs at up to 96kHz/24-bit. The Bluetooth module enables playback from smartphones, tablets, and computers with CD-quality or better resolution.
Storage and Local Playback
For local music storage, the DMP-A1 features a tool-free externally accessible M.2 NVMe 3.0 2280 SSD slot supporting drives up to 8TB (SSD not included). Additional storage is available via USB 3.0 ports (two at the rear, one USB 2.0 at the front), and the unit supports network-attached storage over SMB and NFS. The DMP-A1 can also act as an SMB server, making its internal storage available to other devices on the network. External USB optical drives are supported for CD playback and lossless ripping directly from the unit.
The dp Music Player application supports SACD ISO, DFF, DSF, FLAC, WAV, APE, DTS, and MQA file formats at up to DSD512 and PCM 768kHz natively, bypassing Android's sample rate conversion (SRC) for bit-perfect output. The application includes music library management with automatic album art, artist data, and lyrics retrieval, alongside playlist creation and precise search functions.
Control
The DMP-A1 can be operated via the touchscreen, via the supplied aluminium alloy infrared remote control, or via the dp SmartController app for iOS and Android. The app supports screen mirroring, file browsing, and full system control over the local network, including remote wake functionality. An HDMI output allows the DMP-A1 interface to be displayed on an external monitor or television, with synchronised control between the internal screen and the HDMI output. A 3.5mm trigger port (5 to 12V) is provided for system integration.
