The PMA-900HNE sits above the PMA-600NE in Denon's integrated amplifier range, adding built-in network streaming via the HEOS platform to a fully discrete analogue amplifier design. It is aimed at listeners who want a single component to handle both traditional hi-fi sources and contemporary streaming services without compromise in either domain.
Amplifier Design
At its core, the PMA-900HNE uses Denon's Advanced HC (High Current) Single Push-Pull circuit, a discrete, transistor-based topology free of integrated circuit building blocks in the signal path. Dedicated heat sinks manage thermal dissipation, and a high-current dynamic power supply provides 50 watts per channel into 8 ohms, rising to 85 watts per channel into 4 ohms. An aluminium front panel and rigid anti-vibration chassis contribute to a build quality that is unusually substantial for its price bracket. Source Direct mode bypasses the tone controls entirely for the most direct signal path, while Bass, Treble, Mid, and Balance controls remain available when full tonal flexibility is required.
Digital Conversion and Sources
An ESS 9018K2M DAC with Denon's AL32 processing handles conversion of all digital signals, accepting PCM up to 192kHz/24-bit on all digital inputs. Three optical (TosLink) inputs and one coaxial digital input cover CD transports, televisions, and other optical sources. A USB-A port on the rear accepts storage devices for direct playback. Both Moving Magnet and Moving Coil phono cartridges are supported via a dedicated phono stage, the MM sensitivity is set at 2.5mV/47kΩ and the MC at 200μV, making the PMA-900HNE a practical one-box solution for turntable enthusiasts. Three high-level analogue inputs (105mV/40kΩ) complete the input complement, alongside a recorder output loop.
Network Streaming
The HEOS platform is built in, providing access to Spotify Connect, Amazon Music, Tidal, Deezer, TuneIn internet radio, and SoundCloud directly from the HEOS app or compatible voice assistants. AirPlay 2 is supported for Apple device streaming, and Bluetooth provides cable-free connection from smartphones and tablets. Both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands are supported (802.11b/g/n/ac), alongside a wired Ethernet port for those who prefer a stable network connection. Lossless formats including FLAC, WAV, and AIFF at up to 192kHz/24-bit are handled over the network, and DSD streaming at up to 5.6MHz is supported via HEOS. The PMA-900HNE carries Roon Tested certification.
Outputs and Usability
Two independent sets of speaker terminals (A and B) allow two pairs of loudspeakers to be connected and switched between or combined. A subwoofer pre-out adds low-frequency extension flexibility for hybrid stereo/home cinema setups. The front-panel headphone output includes a gain control option for differing headphone sensitivities. A low-noise OLED display with adjustable dimmer, including an off setting, keeps the front panel clean without sacrificing legibility. The detachable IEC power cable, auto power-off, and IR learning function for TV remote control round out the usability feature set. Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Josh.ai voice control are all supported.
