David Bowie’s self-titled debut album, originally released on Deram Records on 1 June 1967, is presented here as a 2016 vinyl LP reissue. Recorded between November 1966 and March 1967, the album showcases a young Bowie experimenting with theatrical pop, music hall influences, and storytelling — a distinctive departure from the beat-group sound of his earlier singles.
The Album
Produced by Mike Vernon, the album features fourteen tracks that range from whimsical character sketches to more contemplative pieces. Opening with “Uncle Arthur” and closing with the stark, spoken-word “Please Mr. Gravedigger”, the record demonstrates the eclecticism and ambition that would come to define Bowie’s career. Tracks such as “Rubber Band”, “Love You till Tuesday”, and “When I Live My Dream” highlight his gift for melody and theatrical arrangement.
