The DALI Opticon 8 MK2 is the flagship floorstanding speaker of the Opticon MK2 series, sitting at the top of a range that also includes the Opticon 6 MK2 and Opticon 2 MK2 standmount. Engineered for large listening spaces, it combines immense low-frequency bandwidth with extraordinary midrange detail and treble refinement. Designed and manufactured at DALI's production facilities in central Denmark, the Opticon 8 MK2 represents a thorough overhaul of the original Opticon 8, with redesigned drivers, crossover network, and cabinet construction throughout.
Hybrid Tweeter Module
At the heart of the Opticon 8 MK2's high-frequency reproduction is DALI's hybrid tweeter module, combining a 29 mm soft dome tweeter with a custom 17 × 45 mm planar element. The dome provides the controlled directivity and tonal warmth expected of a conventional tweeter, while the ultra-lightweight planar element extends the response to 30 kHz and adds a wide, even dispersion that benefits off-axis listening positions. The two elements work together to deliver clarity and finesse across a broad sweet spot.
SMC Magnet Motor Technology
All drivers in the Opticon 8 MK2 employ DALI's patented Soft Magnetic Compound (SMC) magnet motor system. SMC is used in the pole pieces of each driver's magnet assembly, where it greatly reduces the mechanical distortion caused by hysteresis and eddy currents that occur in conventional iron or steel motor systems. The result is measurably lower third-order distortion, which translates to a cleaner, more transparent midrange and tighter bass control.
Driver Complement and Bass Performance
The 3½-way crossover topology feeds two dedicated 8″ bass drivers, a 6½″ midrange driver, and the hybrid tweeter module. All cone drivers use DALI's signature wood fibre construction — a blend of paper pulp and wood fibre that delivers a stiff yet well-damped diaphragm with minimal break-up resonance. The dual bass drivers are loaded by rear-firing ports with a dual-flare shape that minimises turbulence at high excursion levels, extending low-frequency bandwidth down to 38 Hz. The 25 mm thick front baffle and extensive internal bracing ensure the cabinet remains inert even at high playback levels, with a maximum SPL capability of 112 dB.
Crossover Design
The crossover network operates at 380 Hz, 2,200 Hz, and 14,000 Hz, carefully distributing the workload across each driver's optimal operating range. The 3½-way topology allows the midrange driver to operate across a broad band without interference from bass frequencies, preserving vocal clarity and instrumental texture. DALI rates the speaker at a nominal impedance of 4 ohms with a sensitivity of 88.5 dB (2.83V/1m), recommending amplifier power between 40 and 300 watts.
