Description

A compact active subwoofer for systems that need weight rather than volume. The BASIK SUB is built to partner standmount speakers such as the KUPID and SONIK 1, filling in the low frequencies a small cabinet cannot reach, and its down-firing driver spreads bass evenly enough that it can sit against a wall or in a corner without announcing itself. Available in five finishes; this one is Solid White.

Driver and Cabinet

A single 8-inch long-stroke woofer fires downwards into the floor from a bass reflex cabinet, alongside a down-firing bass port. The cone uses a paper diaphragm driven by an oversized ferrite magnet and high-flux motor system, and a long, vented voice coil helps the driver shed heat at higher listening levels. Firing downwards spreads bass energy evenly around the room and makes the subwoofer harder to pinpoint by ear, so it can sit against a wall or tucked into a corner without drawing attention to itself. The enclosure is tuned to 43 Hz and measures 319 mm high by 295 mm wide by 310 mm deep, with four decoupled feet raising the cabinet roughly 25 mm clear of the floor.

Amplification

A built-in Class D amplifier delivers 170 W RMS and 220 W at peak, supported by a switch-mode power supply and a dual-stage limiter that protects both amplifier and driver. DALI quotes a maximum SPL of 108 dB at one metre and an in-room frequency range of 33 Hz to 120 Hz (+/-3 dB) through the line inputs, extending to 33 Hz to 200 Hz through the LFE input. Maximum power consumption is 250 W, and standby draw falls to 0.5 W or less.

Connections and Controls

The rear panel carries a pair of unbalanced RCA line inputs for a stereo system plus a separate mono RCA LFE input for an AV receiver or processor. Using the LFE input bypasses the internal crossover and fixes the upper frequency limit at 200 Hz, leaving bass management to the receiver. For stereo use, the CROSSOVER control sweeps the low-pass filter from 40 Hz to 120 Hz; DALI suggests starting at roughly 90 Hz when partnering the KUPID. A PHASE switch selects 0 or 180 degrees, a VOLUME control sets the level relative to the main speakers, and a three-position POWER MODE switch offers On, Auto and Off. In Auto, signal sensing wakes the subwoofer and returns it to standby after around 20 minutes without input, with the power LED showing blue when active and red in standby. Input impedance is 25 kilohms, and a mains cable is supplied in the box.

Placement

DALI recommends floor placement. The metal amplifier backplate can become warm in use, so leave at least 5 cm of clearance to the nearest object, and keep the down-firing woofer and port clear of obstructions.
