Released on 25 August 1975 through Columbia Records, Born to Run is the album that transformed Bruce Springsteen from cult favourite to one of rock's most celebrated artists. After two critically admired but commercially modest albums, Springsteen spent over eighteen months crafting these eight tracks into something extraordinary, a record built on cinematic arrangements, Phil Spector-inspired Wall of Sound production, and some of the most vivid lyrical imagery in American rock. Debuting at number three on the Billboard 200, the album has since been certified seven-times platinum by the RIAA.
About the Album
Recorded between January 1974 and July 1975 at 914 Sound Studios in Blauvelt, New York and the Record Plant in New York City, Born to Run was co-produced by Bruce Springsteen, his manager Mike Appel, and producer Jon Landau. Engineered primarily by Jimmy Iovine, the sessions were painstaking, Springsteen famously spent six months perfecting the title track alone. The result is a dense, orchestrated sound built around the E Street Band, with Clarence Clemons' saxophone soaring over Roy Bittan's piano, Max Weinberg's drums, and Garry Tallent's bass. Tracks such as Thunder Road and Jungleland unfurl like short films, blending poetry with hard rock abandon. Eric Meola's iconic cover photograph, Springsteen leaning on saxophonist Clarence Clemons, became one of rock's most enduring images.
