The Bowers & Wilkins M-1 is a compact satellite speaker designed for use in multi-channel home theatre systems or as a stereo pair with or without a subwoofer. Sitting within the Bowers & Wilkins Mini Theatre range, the M-1 combines a discreet form factor with performance that belies its size, making it a versatile building block for systems where space is at a premium.
Driver Technology
The M-1 employs a two-way vented-box design with a 25mm metal dome tweeter and a 100mm woven glass fibre cone bass/midrange driver. The tweeter draws on design cues from the high-end Nautilus, using tube-loaded construction to control rear-wave energy and reduce resonance. The bass/midrange driver features a long-throw design for improved low-frequency output from the compact enclosure, with the anti-resonance plug technology first seen on the PM1.
Performance
Despite its small footprint, the M-1 delivers a frequency response of 64Hz to 23kHz (±3dB), extending to 55Hz at –6dB. This unusually deep bass reach for a speaker of this size allows the M-1 to operate convincingly in two-channel applications without a subwoofer. Harmonic distortion is kept below 1% from 120Hz to 30kHz at 90dB (1m), ensuring clean output across the operating range.
Mounting Flexibility
The M-1 includes both a table stand with a swivelling multi-position foot and a wall-mounting bracket, allowing placement on shelves, walls, or stands. An optional floor stand is also available separately. This flexibility makes the M-1 equally suited to front, surround, or height channel duties in a home cinema setup.
Partnering
For a complete Bowers & Wilkins Mini Theatre system, the M-1 pairs naturally with the ASW608 or PV1D subwoofer. The recommended amplifier power is 20W to 100W into 8Ω on unclipped programme material.
