The Advance Paris X-CD9 sits within the French manufacturer's Classic-Line range, positioned as a premium CD player that combines a precision disc mechanism with a valve output stage. Where most CD players at this price point rely entirely on solid-state circuitry, the X-CD9 adds a pair of subminiature 5744 signal tubes as a buffer stage after its Wolfson WM8762 DAC, lending the analogue output a warmth and body that sets it apart from conventionally designed rivals.

Valve Output Stage

The two 5744 subminiature tubes sit between the DAC and the analogue outputs, acting as a buffer that shapes the signal before it reaches the amplifier. These tubes are visible through a window on the acrylic glass front panel, glowing during operation. The combination of a Wolfson WM8762 DAC with oversampling capability (24-bit/96kHz and 24-bit/192kHz) and a valve buffer stage aims to deliver the detail retrieval of modern digital conversion with the tonal characteristics associated with tube circuitry.

Connectivity

The X-CD9 provides both balanced XLR and single-ended RCA analogue outputs, with maximum output levels of 3.9V (XLR) and 2V (RCA) at an output impedance of 470 ohms. Digital duties are handled by coaxial (RCA, 75 ohm) and optical (TOSLINK) outputs, allowing the X-CD9 to serve as a CD transport feeding an external DAC if preferred. A front-panel USB input adds further versatility, and a 12V trigger input enables integration with automated system control.

Power Supply & Construction

Power is supplied by a toroidal transformer, chosen for its low mechanical noise and efficient power delivery to the CD mechanism, laser control, and DAC circuitry. The front panel is finished in acrylic glass with a black finish, and the unit rides on machined aluminium isolation feet. At 431mm wide and just 73mm tall, the X-CD9 is a slim component that matches standard hi-fi rack widths.
