The Advance Paris X-A1200 sits at the top of the French manufacturer’s Classic Line power amplifier range, above the X-A220 EVO and X-A160 EVO. Where those models offer stereo or lower-powered mono configurations, the X-A1200 is a dedicated monophonic design delivering over 450W RMS into 8Ω and more than 700W into 4Ω, built for listeners who require serious current reserves and absolute control over demanding loudspeaker loads.
Power Supply and Output Stage
At the heart of the X-A1200 is a 1,000 VA toroidal transformer, supported by a substantial capacitor bank and two power diode bridges mounted on a large heatsink. Ten high-current power transistors (ON Semiconductor NJW0281G and NJW0302G complementary pairs) handle the amplification, chosen for their ability to sustain high peak currents without compression.
Class A / AB Operation
A rear-panel switch engages High Bias mode, in which the X-A1200 operates in Class A for the initial watts of output. Beyond this threshold, the amplifier transitions automatically and progressively into Class AB. This approach combines the tonal characteristics of Class A at typical listening levels with the headroom and efficiency of Class AB when higher output is demanded.
Construction
The chassis is built for rigidity and electromagnetic isolation. The interior is compartmentalised, with galvanic separation between the power supply, amplification, and input stages. This layout is designed to minimise interference between sub-assemblies. A front-mounted VU meter provides real-time output monitoring. At 25.5 kg, the build reflects the scale of the internal components.
Connectivity
The X-A1200 accepts both balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) inputs, with input impedances of 38 kΩ and 32 kΩ respectively. Gain is fixed at 34.2 dB ±1 dB. The amplifier is designed to pair with the Advance Paris X-P1200 preamplifier, which offers balanced XLR outputs; two X-A1200 units in a mono pair complete a fully balanced signal path from source to speaker.
