The Advance Paris A12 is the flagship integrated amplifier in the French manufacturer's Classic Line, sitting above the A10 Classic. It combines a tube preamplifier stage with a Class A/B solid-state power amplifier in a true dual-mono configuration, each channel fed by its own dedicated toroidal transformer. The result is 190 watts per channel into 8Ω (280W into 4Ω), delivered with the tonal warmth of the ECC81 tube front end and the grip and authority of transistor output stages.
Hybrid Architecture
At the heart of the A12 is a pair of ECC81 (12AT7) double-triode tubes, visible through a window in the front panel. These handle the preamplification duties, imparting a smooth, musical character before handing off to the solid-state power section. The dual-mono layout means the left and right channels are electrically independent from power supply through to output, minimising crosstalk and maximising channel separation (rated at better than 75dB).
Built-in DAC and Digital Connectivity
The A12 houses a Texas Instruments Burr-Brown PCM1796 DAC, accepting signals up to 24-bit/192kHz via its USB Type B input and supporting DSD 64/128 playback. Digital connectivity is exceptionally comprehensive: three optical and three coaxial S/PDIF inputs, an AES/EBU balanced digital input, a USB Type A for storage playback, and two HDMI inputs (one with ARC) for integration with television audio. Optical and coaxial inputs support up to 24-bit/96kHz.
Analogue Inputs and Phono Stage
Analogue connectivity is equally generous, with five RCA line-level inputs, two balanced XLR inputs, and a dedicated phono stage supporting both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges with selectable loading capacitance (100pF, 200pF, 320pF). A tape loop is also provided for recording enthusiasts.
Outputs and Flexibility
The A12 features dual speaker outputs (zones A and B) for multi-room use, along with two subwoofer outputs with switchable crossover frequencies (75Hz or 120Hz). Preamplifier outputs are available in both RCA and XLR, allowing the A12 to drive external power amplifiers. Two headphone outputs — one 3.5mm and one 6.35mm — offer adjustable gain and impedance matching. A pair of 12V trigger outputs rounds out the connectivity for system integration.
Design
The front panel features a thick polished black acrylic fascia with two illuminated blue analogue VU meters and three rotary controls with LED-lit rings. Optional Bluetooth capability can be added via the X-FTB01 or X-FTB02 modules, sold separately.
