Acoustic Energy AE509 Floorstanding Speakers Piano Black Gloss (Pair)

The Acoustic Energy AE509 is a two-way floorstanding loudspeaker from the 500 Series — the company’s flagship range of hi-fi speakers. Sitting above the compact AE500 standmount and below the three-way AE520 flagship, the AE509 combines the 500 Series’ carbon fibre driver technology and Resonance Suppression Composite cabinet construction in a slim, room-friendly floorstander designed for medium to large listening rooms.

Driver Technology

The AE509 employs two 125 mm carbon fibre cone mid/bass drivers arranged in an MTM (Mid–Tweeter–Mid) configuration around a 25 mm carbon fibre dome tweeter. Carbon fibre’s high stiffness-to-weight ratio ensures pistonic motion across the operating band, delivering rapid transient response with low distortion. The mid/bass drivers feature oversized 35 mm voice coils for low thermal compression and a high motor force factor, providing a dynamic yet controlled bass response. The two-way crossover at 2.9 kHz uses high-voltage polypropylene film capacitors and air-core inductors.

Tweeter and Waveguide

The 25 mm carbon fibre dome tweeter is loaded into a cast aluminium WDT (Wide Dispersion Technology) waveguide. The waveguide is positioned close to the upper mid/bass driver for optimal acoustic integration and is machined from aluminium to minimise vibration transfer to the dome. This arrangement ensures wide, even dispersion and a smooth, natural treble with no harshness at higher listening levels.

Cabinet Construction

The enclosure uses 18 mm Resonance Suppression Composite (RSC) panels — a constrained-layer construction technique that reduces cabinet-borne colouration and distortion. The narrow 185 mm baffle features gently rounded edges to reduce diffraction, while the slimline tower keeps the cabinet’s visual footprint compact despite its 1 000 mm height. Solid aluminium floor-coupling bars are supplied, accepting M10 spikes to anchor the speaker firmly and maximise bass definition. Slim magnetic-fit cloth grilles are included.
