The Diamond 12.1i is the entry standmount in Wharfedale's updated Diamond 12i Series, sitting below the larger 12.2i and 12.3i bookshelf models within the same range. It is the 2026 refresh of the original Diamond 12.1, retaining the proven two-way driver complement while introducing new cabinet finishes and revised internal tuning.
Driver Complement
A 130mm bass/mid driver uses Wharfedale's Klarity cone, a blend of polypropylene and mica that combines stiffness with internal damping for low colouration. Ribbed cone profiling, a low-damping surround, and an aluminium compensation ring on the magnet system are specified to keep distortion low and dynamics linear. The voice coil is wound on an epoxy/glass fibre bobbin for thermal stability and power handling. High frequencies are handled by a 25mm woven polyester dome tweeter with a high-loss damping coating and a flat front plate for wide off-axis dispersion.
Crossover and Cabinet
The crossover follows a Linkwitz-Riley topology with air-core inductors, components more usually found higher up the price scale. The bass driver's magnet structure has been adjusted to compensate for the resistance of these inductors. The cabinet uses a multi-layered sandwich construction with internal spot bracing between opposing panels to suppress resonance. The 12.1i is rear-ported, with port geometry and internal damping revised by Director of Acoustic Design Peter Comeau and senior engineers Dan Bailey Ornellas and Oliver Davies for cleaner low-frequency control in real rooms.
What Changes from the Original 12.1
The driver array, crossover topology, and overall enclosure proportions carry over from the well-received Diamond 12.1. The 12i refresh focuses on appearance and bass behaviour: three new finishes (All-Black, Stone Grey, and Classic Walnut with semi-matte black baffle) replace the original colour set, and the bass-port tuning is reworked for tighter low-end definition.
Connection and Placement
A single pair of binding posts on the rear panel accepts banana plugs, spades or bare wire from a UK Type G mains-powered amplifier. The cabinet measures 312 x 180 x 250mm (depth excluding 28mm rear terminal protrusion) and weighs 6.8kg per speaker, comfortably suiting a dedicated stand or a deep, solid shelf. Recommended amplifier power is 20 to 100 watts.
