Designed and engineered in the UK, the 5050 draws on proprietary technologies developed to extract maximum performance at its price point, making it a compelling choice for both stereo and home cinema applications.

Driver Technology

At the heart of the 5050 are two 150 mm (6.0 in) mid/bass drivers featuring Q Acoustics' C³ Continuous Curved Cone™ technology. This proprietary cone profile combines the bass extension benefits of a traditional straight conic shape with the superior midrange control of a flared design, resulting in reduced harmonic distortion and smoother integration with the high-frequency driver. Motor strength has been increased by 50% over comparable designs through the use of substantial magnets paired with larger 25.4 mm voice coils, which directly improves dynamic range, particularly in the bass region.

The 25 mm tweeter is hermetically sealed and mechanically isolated from the baffle, preventing internal cabinet pressure from modulating the diaphragm. This floating mount arrangement reduces colouration and distortion, while careful venting of the tweeter chamber enables a lower crossover point of 2.7 kHz for seamless midrange-to-treble integration.

Cabinet Construction

The 5050's enclosure benefits from P2P™ (Point-to-Point) bracing, a system of strategically placed internal struts that stiffen critical panel sections. This reduces cabinet-induced resonance and improves the focus and accuracy of the stereo image. The 39.7-litre effective volume provides the air space needed for the dual drivers to operate with authority at lower frequencies.

Exclusive to the 5050 within the 5000 Series is HPE™ (Helmholtz Pressure Equaliser) technology. Specially designed internal tubes convert pressure to velocity and reduce the overall pressure gradient within the enclosure, addressing the standing wave issues that are inherent in taller loudspeaker cabinets. The result is cleaner, more articulate bass reproduction.

Practical Details

Each speaker measures 1017 x 366 x 336 mm (40.0 x 15.2 x 13.2 in) including the supplied spike feet and rear stabiliser, and weighs 21.6 kg (47.6 lbs). The 5050 presents a nominal impedance of 6 ohms with a minimum of 3 ohms, and Q Acoustics recommends amplifier power between 25 and 150 watts. A sensitivity rating of 91.8 dB/W/m means the 5050 will perform well with modestly powered amplifiers while scaling effectively with higher-end electronics. Magnetic grilles, a foam bung for port tuning, and spike feet with protective covers are included.
