Definitive Technology
Definitive Technology was founded in Owings Mills, Maryland, by Sandy Gross — who had previously co-founded Polk Audio — together with Don Givogue and Ed Blaise. The company was established with the aim of producing high-performance loudspeakers that were accessible to a broad audience, at a time when home theatre was beginning to emerge as a consumer category.
The brand's early products were monolithic bipolar speaker towers, with drivers mounted on both the front and rear of the cabinet to replicate the radiation pattern of planar speakers and achieve a more open, room-filling sound. In 1995, Definitive Technology introduced the BP 2000, widely regarded as the first commercially available loudspeaker with a built-in powered subwoofer, combining the bipolar array with a self-powered bass unit in a single enclosure. This Supertower format became a defining product line for the brand.
In 2004, Definitive Technology was acquired by Directed Electronics, and by 2013 was grouped alongside Polk Audio within the Sound United division of DEI Holdings. Sandy Gross departed the company in 2010 to found GoldenEar Technology. Today, Definitive Technology is headquartered in Vista, California, and produces a range of home audio products including floor-standing and bookshelf speakers, soundbars, wireless home audio systems, and headphones.
