The AE109² is proof that a floorstanding speaker doesn't need to dominate your living room to fill it with sound. Slim, elegant, and surprisingly powerful, it picks up where the original AE109 left off over two decades ago — delivering room-filling performance from a slender cabinet that tucks discreetly into virtually any space. This isn't a minor facelift of the original; it's a complete ground-up redesign that raises the bar for what an entry-level floorstander can achieve.

At its core is a 2.5-way crossover with a unique topology that allows integration and power handling previously unattainable from this type of speaker. Twin 130mm paper cone drivers — each built around an ultra-high force, long-throw motor system — share duties through a carefully phase- and time-aligned network. One driver handles midrange and bass, the other reinforces the low end only, giving the AE109² a bass weight and authority that belies its narrow profile. A 25mm soft dome tweeter with Acoustic Energy's Wide Dispersion Technology (WDT) waveguide completes the lineup, delivering smooth, spacious treble across a wide listening area.

HDF Cabinet with Mass Loading

Like the rest of the 100 Series, the AE109² uses 15mm HDF (High Density Fibreboard) construction — a step up from standard MDF that allows thinner walls without sacrificing stiffness or mass. The cabinet features carefully tuned internal bracing to minimise resonance, while inert mass-loading in the base adds stability and further damps unwanted vibration. The result is a speaker that sounds composed and controlled even when pushed hard, with minimal cabinet coloration intruding on the music. A rear-mounted slot port enhances bass extension smoothly without excessive room interaction, making the AE109² refreshingly easy to position — it works well close to a rear wall or pulled further into the room.

Easy to Drive, Hard to Outgrow

With a sensitivity of 89dB and a 6-ohm impedance, the AE109² presents a straightforward load for most modern amplifiers. You don't need exotic electronics to get the best from these speakers — a quality integrated amplifier in the 40–80W range will drive them with authority. That said, they also reward better partnering equipment, scaling impressively if you upgrade your amplifier or source down the line.

Styling and Finish

Drawing design cues from the award-winning 500 Series, the AE109² features clean, uncluttered lines with gently rounded edges. Available in Black or Walnut vinyl veneer, each pair ships with slim magnetic-fit cloth grilles and carpet-piercing spikes (M8 thread) for solid floor coupling.
