Acoustic Energy AE109² Floorstanding Speakers Walnut (Pair)

The AE109² is a slim, room-filling floorstander from Acoustic Energy’s entry-level 100 Series — a range that also includes the AE100² bookshelf, AE120² flagship floorstander, AE107² centre channel, and AE105 wall-mount surround. Sitting between the compact AE100² and the larger AE120², the AE109² picks up where the original AE109 left off over two decades ago, delivering a complete ground-up redesign that raises the bar for what an entry-level floorstander can achieve.

2.5-Way Driver Configuration

At the heart of the AE109² is a 2.5-way crossover with a unique topology. Twin 130mm paper cone drivers — each built around an ultra-high force, long-throw motor system — share duties through a carefully phase- and time-aligned network, crossing at 275Hz and 2.5kHz. One driver handles midrange and bass while the other reinforces the low end only, giving the AE109² a bass weight and authority that belies its narrow 165mm profile. A 25mm soft dome tweeter with Acoustic Energy’s Wide Dispersion Technology (WDT) waveguide completes the lineup, delivering smooth, spacious treble across a wide listening area. The tweeter was designed in tandem with the 100 Series bass driver to offer optimum integration and tonal matching.

HDF Cabinet Construction

The cabinet uses 15mm High Density Fibreboard (HDF) — a step up from standard MDF that allows thinner walls without sacrificing stiffness or mass. Driver placement has been moved closer to the tweeter, borrowing from the 500 Series, while carefully tuned internal bracing minimises resonance. Inert mass-loading in the base adds stability and further damps unwanted vibration. A rear-mounted slot port enhances bass extension smoothly, reducing the chuffing and distortion common with conventional round ports, and making the AE109² refreshingly easy to position — it works well close to a rear wall or pulled further into the room.

Easy to Drive

With a sensitivity of 89dB and a 6-ohm impedance, the AE109² presents a straightforward load for most modern amplifiers. A quality integrated amplifier in the 40–80W range will drive them with authority, though they also reward better partnering equipment, scaling impressively if you upgrade your amplifier or source down the line. Peak SPL reaches 115dB, with power handling up to 175W.

Finish and Accessories

Drawing design cues from the award-winning 500 Series, the AE109² features clean, uncluttered lines with gently rounded edges. Available in Black or Walnut vinyl veneer, each pair ships with slim magnetic-fit cloth grilles and carpet-piercing spikes with an M8 thread for solid floor coupling.
