The Wharfedale Evo 4.C is the dedicated centre channel speaker in the Evo 4 range, a series developed in parallel with the flagship Elysian loudspeakers. It shares several key technologies with its larger, more expensive siblings — including the Air Motion Transformer tweeter and woven Kevlar bass drivers — but at a fraction of the cost. As the anchor of any Evo 4 surround system, the 4.C is responsible for the bulk of dialogue and on-screen effects, and its three-way design ensures that each frequency band is handled by a purpose-built driver.
Driver Technology
The Evo 4.C employs a 30 x 60mm AMT (Air Motion Transformer) tweeter derived from the Elysian range. Rather than pushing air like a conventional dome, the AMT’s pleated diaphragm squeezes air out in a concertina motion, producing a fast, detailed high-frequency response with wide dispersion. Below the AMT sits a 50mm soft dome midrange driver, dedicated to vocal frequencies between the 1.5 kHz and 3.9 kHz crossover points. Two 165mm (6.5 inch) woven Kevlar bass drivers handle the low frequencies, extending bass response down to 42 Hz (-6 dB).
Cabinet Construction
The cabinet employs Wharfedale’s multi-layered sandwich construction, combining soft, high-loss chipboard between stiff MDF layers. The dissimilar resonance characteristics of each material work to cancel each other’s vibrations, reducing cabinet colouration. Bass loading is handled by Wharfedale’s Slot-Loaded Profiled Port (SLPP) system, which shapes airflow at the port exit to minimise turbulence and audible chuffing at high output levels. The cabinet is finished in real wood veneer, available in Black Oak, Walnut, and White Oak.
Performance & System Integration
With a sensitivity of 90 dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms (4.3 ohms minimum), the Evo 4.C is a relatively easy load for AV receivers and amplifiers rated between 25 and 150 watts. It is capable of reaching peak sound pressure levels of 108 dB. The speaker is designed to partner with the Evo 4.1 and Evo 4.2 bookshelf models, the Evo 4.3 and Evo 4.4 floorstanders, and the Evo 4.S surround speakers in a complete home cinema system.
