The Wharfedale Evo 4.2 is the mid-range model in the EVO4 series, a range developed in direct parallel with Wharfedale's flagship ELYSIAN loudspeakers and sharing much of the same driver technology and engineering philosophy. Where the smaller Evo 4.1 is a 2-way design, the Evo 4.2 adds a dedicated 2-inch soft dome midrange driver, creating a 3-way system that extends the AMT tweeter's bandwidth duties upward and shifts the crossover point lower for broader midrange dispersion and greater clarity.
AMT Tweeter
The Air Motion Transformer (AMT) tweeter used across the EVO4 range operates on a fundamentally different principle to a conventional dome tweeter. A large, pleated lightweight diaphragm is driven across its surface by rows of strategically placed magnets. The pleated geometry means the diaphragm moves a larger volume of air than its physical footprint suggests, and the close magnetic control keeps it accurately tracking the signal at all times. The result is a wide-bandwidth transducer with low distortion and exceptional musical detail that avoids the brightness and listening fatigue of lesser high-frequency designs.
Dome Midrange
To bridge the AMT and the woofer, Wharfedale developed a dedicated 2-inch (50mm) fabric dome midrange. The dome is damped with a plasticiser coating and vented into a large, specially shaped rear chamber that scatters and absorbs back energy which would otherwise reflect back through the dome out of phase. By eliminating this rear-wave distortion, the driver delivers improved clarity and lower colouration. The rear chamber also extends the driver's low-frequency performance, giving the midrange a linear response from 800Hz to 5kHz. This wide bandwidth allowed Wharfedale's designers to set the midrange-to-woofer crossover at 1.4kHz so the dome handles more of the lower midrange, where dispersion of a woofer cone begins to narrow.
Kevlar Woofer
The 6.5-inch (165mm) woofer applies the same low-distortion motor system developed for the ELYSIAN range's bass units to a woven Kevlar cone. Kevlar's high stiffness ensures accurate piston motion through the woofer's working range, while its inherent damping suppresses resonance modes. A low-loss rubber surround absorbs further cone resonances, and the crossover at 1.4kHz keeps the woofer focused on bass and lower midrange, where its large radiating area delivers the weight, warmth, and articulation of realistic bass reproduction.
SLPP Bass Reflex System
Like the ELYSIAN flagship, the Evo 4.2 uses Wharfedale's Slot Loaded Profiled Port (SLPP). In a conventional bass reflex design the port tube opens abruptly into the room, and the pressure difference between the high-pressure interior and the low-pressure room creates air turbulence — the audible chuffing or popping known as port noise. In the SLPP system, both ends of the port tube are flared with semi-parabolic flanges to linearise airflow, and the low-frequency energy exits through a slot at the speaker's base, profiled to equalise the internal pressure to room pressure smoothly. This eliminates port-induced distortion while delivering bass extension to 48Hz (−6dB) and a measured frequency response of 54Hz–22kHz (±3dB).
Cabinet Construction
The Evo 4.2's cabinet walls use a multi-layer sandwich of soft, high-loss chipboard between stiff MDF layers. The two materials have dissimilar resonance characteristics that cancel one another, reducing vibration and colouration. Intelligent Spot Bracing connects opposite walls with computer-modelled braces positioned to minimise panel resonance without transferring vibration between faces. Cabinet edges are contoured to reduce diffraction colouration. The exterior is finished in book-matched real wood veneer applied to all visible faces, with Black Oak, Walnut, and White Oak available.
Connection
The Evo 4.2 is fitted with two sets of angled 5-way binding post terminals on the rear panel, supporting both single-wire and bi-wire connection. The angled layout eases cable dressing and improves access in tight spaces. Sold as a matched pair.
