The Polk Audio HTS 12 is the larger of Polk’s two HTS-series powered subwoofers, sitting above the 10-inch HTS 10 in the range. Built around a 12-inch polypropylene Dynamic Balance driver that has been Klippel optimised for improved linearity, lower distortion and greater durability, it delivers bass extension down to 22 Hz from a substantial but well-proportioned ported cabinet. A 200-watt RMS (400-watt peak) Class D amplifier provides the power, and Polk’s patented Power Port bass venting system manages the transition of air from cabinet to room.
Driver and Klippel Optimisation
The 12-inch long-throw driver uses a polypropylene cone with rubber surround, designed using Polk’s Dynamic Balance technology. Klippel optimisation is applied during development to reduce distortion, improve linearity and increase durability, resulting in cleaner output at higher excursions.
Power Port Bass Venting
Rather than a conventional rear-firing port tube, the HTS 12 uses Polk’s patented Power Port system. This floor-firing vent smoothly transitions airflow from the port into the listening room, reducing the turbulence and port noise that conventional ports can produce at high output levels. The result is tighter, more controlled bass with less port compression.
Amplification and Controls
The integrated Class D amplifier delivers 200 watts RMS with 400-watt peak capability. Rear-panel controls include a continuously variable volume dial, an adjustable low-pass crossover (40–160 Hz), and a 0°/180° phase switch. An auto on/off circuit powers the subwoofer up when it detects an audio signal and returns it to standby (consuming just 0.5 W) after a period of silence—the unit is Energy Star compliant. A 12 V DC trigger input is also provided for integration with AV receivers and automation systems that support trigger-based power control.
Connectivity
The HTS 12 provides two input paths: an LFE (low-frequency effects) input that bypasses the internal crossover for use with AV receivers that handle bass management, and a pair of stereo RCA line-level inputs with the internal crossover active. This dual-input arrangement covers both dedicated home cinema setups and stereo hi-fi systems where external bass management is not available.
