The KEF Q950 is the flagship floorstanding speaker in KEF's Q Series, sitting above the Q750 and Q550 in the range. It pairs KEF's signature 11th-generation Uni-Q driver array — a concentric design that places a 38 mm vented aluminium dome tweeter at the acoustic centre of a 165 mm midrange cone — with a dedicated 200 mm long-throw aluminium bass driver and two matching 200 mm auxiliary bass radiators (ABRs). The result is a 2.5-way system engineered to deliver wide, even dispersion across the full frequency range while extending bass response down to 44 Hz.
Uni-Q Driver Array
The Uni-Q concept places the tweeter at the exact acoustic centre of the midrange cone, so that both drivers radiate sound from the same point in space. This concentric arrangement means the listener hears a single, coherent wavefront at all frequencies rather than the interference patterns that arise when drivers are spaced apart on a conventional baffle. The 11th-generation Uni-Q used in the Q950 features a vented aluminium dome tweeter with a rear damping chamber, allowing it to extend to 28 kHz while maintaining controlled dispersion.
Bass System
Below the Uni-Q sits a 200 mm long-throw aluminium bass driver, supported by two 200 mm ABRs mounted lower on the front baffle. The ABR design eliminates the port noise and cabinet resonances associated with bass-reflex enclosures — instead, the passive radiators are tuned to extend low-frequency output while keeping the cabinet sealed against unwanted air turbulence. With a maximum SPL of 113 dB, the Q950 has the dynamic range to fill larger listening rooms without strain.
Cabinet & Build
The Q950's MDF cabinet is internally braced and divided into separate chambers for the bass and midrange/treble sections, reducing internal standing waves and keeping the enclosure acoustically inert. The front baffle is contoured to minimise diffraction around the Uni-Q driver. Each speaker is supplied with an aluminium outrigger foot and four floor spikes for rigid floor coupling and tilt adjustment. Sold as a pair.
Amplifier Matching
With a sensitivity of 91 dB and a nominal impedance of 8 Ohms (3.2 Ohms minimum), the Q950 is an easy load for most amplifiers. KEF recommend amplifier power in the range of 15–200 W per channel. The single-wire binding post terminals accept banana plugs, spade lugs, pin connectors, or bare wire up to 10 AWG.
