The Definitive Technology Demand D7 is the most compact bookshelf speaker in the Demand Series, sitting below the D9 and D11 in the lineup. Despite its small footprint, it uses the same core driver technologies found throughout the range, delivering controlled two-way performance from a cabinet designed for rooms where space is limited but audio quality is not negotiable.
BDSS Driver Technology
The D7 uses a 4.5” (114mm) BDSS (Balanced Double Surround System) polypropylene bass/mid driver. The BDSS design employs a secondary surround at the inner edge of the cone in addition to the standard outer surround, which allows the driver to move more linearly across its stroke. This increases effective radiating area relative to the chassis size, helping the compact D7 achieve low-frequency extension down to 57 Hz.
Tweeter & Waveguide
High frequencies are handled by a 1” (25mm) annealed aluminium dome tweeter. The annealing process heats the dome and then slowly cools it, relieving internal stresses in the metal to produce a smoother, more controlled high-frequency response. The tweeter is laterally offset from the woofer by 5°, which helps create a precise stereo centre image by reducing phase interference between the drivers at the crossover point.
The tweeter sits within a 20/20 Wave Alignment Lens, a shallow waveguide that controls the dispersion pattern of the high frequencies. This helps maintain consistent off-axis response, so the tonal balance remains stable across a wider listening area rather than being confined to a narrow sweet spot.
Linear Response Waveguide
The cabinet incorporates a Linear Response Waveguide around the woofer, shaping the transition between the driver’s output and the baffle. This smooths the midrange-to-treble handoff and reduces diffraction effects at the cabinet edges, contributing to even sound dispersion throughout the listening room.
Cabinet Construction
The D7 uses a bass-ported MDF cabinet with an extruded, natural bead-blasted aluminium front baffle. The aluminium baffle adds rigidity and helps damp resonance at the critical front surface where the drivers are mounted. Magnetic grilles are included for a clean appearance when the drivers are covered. A 3/8”-16 threaded insert on the rear panel provides compatibility with wall-mount brackets for flexible placement options.
Placement & Use
The D7 can serve as a primary stereo pair in compact listening rooms, or as surround and front channels in a multi-channel home cinema system alongside other Demand Series models. At 4 Ohms nominal impedance and 85 dB sensitivity, the D7 is recommended for use with amplifiers rated between 20 and 125 watts per channel. For AV receiver setups, a crossover setting of 80 Hz (Small) is recommended.
