The DALI Rubicon Vokal sits within the Rubicon series as the dedicated centre channel, designed to anchor dialogue and vocals in a multi-channel system built around Rubicon floorstanding or standmount speakers. Within DALI's range hierarchy, the Rubicon series occupies the space between the entry-level Oberon and the flagship Epicon lines, offering a step up in driver technology, cabinet construction, and overall refinement.
Driver Technology
The Rubicon Vokal employs two 6.5 inch low-loss wood fibre woofers, a material chosen by DALI for its combination of lightness, rigidity, and naturally uneven surface structure. The irregular fibre pattern helps break up standing waves across the cone, reducing colouration and allowing the driver to behave as a more uniform piston across its operating range.
High frequencies are handled by DALI's hybrid tweeter module, which combines a conventional soft dome tweeter with a ribbon (planar magnetic) element. The dome provides the bulk of the treble energy and spatial information, while the ribbon extends the response further into the upper registers with minimal distortion. This dual-element approach is a hallmark of the Rubicon series and is shared across all models in the range.
Magnet System and Distortion Control
The Rubicon Vokal features DALI's SMC (Soft Magnetic Compound) magnet system. The pole piece is constructed entirely from SMC material, surrounded by a slitted copper cap and enclosed within a large ferrite magnet. SMC reduces hysteresis distortion in the motor system, resulting in a cleaner signal path and lower mechanical noise at higher listening levels.
Cabinet Design
The cabinet divides the mid-range and bass drivers into separated internal chambers, allowing each section to be individually tuned without mutual interference. A front-facing reflex port provides bass reinforcement while permitting flexible placement close to a wall or below a screen without the boundary-reinforcement issues that rear-ported designs can introduce.
The Rubicon Vokal features gold-plated bi-wiring terminals, allowing the treble and bass sections to be driven independently for those who wish to experiment with bi-wiring or bi-amping configurations.
Placement and Setup
Designed primarily as a centre channel, the Rubicon Vokal can be placed on a shelf beneath a screen or on a dedicated AV rack. DALI recommends allowing a running-in period of up to 100 hours of normal playback for the drivers to reach their full performance potential.
