The Wharfedale Evo 4.1 is the most compact bookshelf speaker in the Evo 4 series, which sits above the entry-level Diamond range and below the flagship Elysian line in Wharfedale's hierarchy. Despite its compact dimensions, the Evo 4.1 delivers a refined and engaging performance, combining advanced driver technology with meticulous cabinet engineering.
Air Motion Transformer Tweeter
At the heart of the Evo 4.1’s high-frequency reproduction is a 30 × 60mm Air Motion Transformer (AMT) tweeter. Unlike conventional dome tweeters that push air with a pistonic motion, the AMT uses a pleated diaphragm that squeezes air out of its folds, moving air approximately five times faster than the diaphragm itself. This mechanism delivers exceptional transient response and musical detail without the brightness or harshness that can accompany lesser tweeter designs.
Kevlar Woofer & Bass Reflex Design
The low-frequency driver is a 130mm (5 inch) woven Kevlar cone woofer, chosen for its combination of rigidity and internal damping. Kevlar’s high strength-to-weight ratio allows the cone to remain stiff across its operating range while its woven structure dissipates unwanted resonances effectively. Bass output is augmented by Wharfedale’s Slot Loaded Profiled Port (SLPP) system, a carefully shaped rear-firing port that smooths airflow to reduce turbulence and the chuffing noise that conventional cylindrical ports can produce. The result is bass that extends to 55 Hz (-6 dB) with authority and articulation.
Cabinet Construction
The Evo 4.1’s enclosure uses a multi-layer sandwich construction designed to minimise panel vibration and cabinet coloration. This approach combines layers of different densities to break up standing waves within the cabinet walls, ensuring that the sound reaching the listener is dominated by the drivers rather than enclosure artefacts. Angled binding posts on the rear panel accommodate bi-wiring for those who wish to separately drive the tweeter and woofer sections of the crossover network, which transitions at 2.9 kHz.
Placement & Amplification
With a sensitivity of 87 dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms (3.5 ohms minimum), the Evo 4.1 is a straightforward load for most amplifiers. Wharfedale recommend amplifier power between 25 and 100 watts. The compact footprint makes the Evo 4.1 well suited to bookshelves, desk setups, or dedicated speaker stands in small to medium-sized rooms.
