The Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 sits at the heart of the Diamond 12 series as a compact two-way bookshelf speaker designed to balance small-room practicality with genuine hi-fi performance. Positioned above the smaller Diamond 12.0 desktop speaker and below the larger Diamond 12.2 standmount, the 12.1 is the series’ true all-rounder — equally at home in a dedicated stereo system or as part of a surround-sound arrangement.
Klarity Cone Technology
The 130 mm mid/bass driver uses Wharfedale’s proprietary Klarity cone, a composite of polypropylene and mica formulated to combine the inherent self-damping of polypropylene with the stiffness that mica adds. The result is a lightweight, rigid diaphragm with low colouration and fast transient response. Wharfedale fitted the cone with a low-damping surround, preserving expressive dynamics without sacrificing tonal neutrality — an approach refined through finite-element simulation of multiple cone profiles and rib-stiffening patterns to achieve a flat response curve.
Motor System & Voice Coil
Behind the Klarity cone sits a precision-machined magnet assembly fitted with an aluminium compensation ring. This ring minimises variations in voice-coil inductance as the cone travels, reducing the intermodulation distortion that can arise from the motor system at higher excursions. The voice coil itself is wound on a high-power epoxy/glass-fibre bobbin — a construction more commonly found in speakers at a higher price point, chosen here to improve power handling and thermal stability.
Tweeter
High-frequency duties are handled by a 25 mm woven polyester dome tweeter, designed for wide dispersion and a smooth, extended response. The textile dome delivers open, airy treble without the sharpness that can accompany metallic designs at this price level.
Cabinet & Port Design
The Diamond 12.1 uses a rear-ported bass-reflex enclosure, allowing the compact cabinet to extend its low-frequency reach down to 65 Hz while maintaining a clean midrange. The rear port placement gives flexibility in room positioning, though some clearance from the rear wall is recommended to avoid bass reinforcement.
