The Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 sits at the heart of the Diamond 12 series, a range that represents one of the most significant overhauls in the Diamond line’s four-decade history. Designed by Karl Heinz Fink — the German-based engineer behind some of the most acclaimed affordable loudspeakers of recent years — the Diamond 12 series was developed from a clean sheet, with virtually every element from the drive units to the cabinet construction redesigned from the ground up. In the lineup, the 12.0 is the most compact model with its 100mm driver, the 12.1 steps up to a 130mm unit for fuller bass extension, and the 12.2 moves to a larger 150mm driver for those wanting greater low-end authority.
Driver Technology
The 130mm bass/mid driver uses Wharfedale’s Klarity cone material — a mica-enhanced polypropylene that achieves a balance of low mass, high rigidity, and well-controlled internal damping. The result is a driver that responds quickly to transients while keeping colouration to a minimum. The voice coil is wound on an epoxy/glass fibre bobbin rather than the more common Kapton or aluminium types found at this price point; epoxy/glass fibre avoids the eddy currents introduced by aluminium and offers greater stiffness than Kapton, improving both power handling and midrange clarity.
The 25mm woven polyester dome tweeter delivers open, smoothly extended high frequencies. Its lightweight diaphragm allows it to reproduce fine detail without harshness, contributing to the Diamond 12.1’s refined top end.
Crossover and Cabinet
The crossover operates at 2.6 kHz using a Linkwitz-Riley 24 dB/octave topology. Air-core inductors are specified throughout — a choice more commonly associated with high-end loudspeakers. Air-core inductors produce the lowest distortion of all inductor types, and their inclusion here reflects the engineering-first approach that runs through the Diamond 12 series.
The rear-ported bass reflex enclosure is carefully tuned to extend low-frequency response down to 54 Hz, delivering a degree of bass weight that belies the cabinet’s compact 312mm-tall dimensions. Internal bracing controls panel resonance and keeps the cabinet acoustically inert.
