The Wharfedale Diamond 12.0 is the entry-level model in the Diamond 12 series — the most compact speaker in the range, designed to deliver genuinely high-performance audio in constrained spaces. Continuing a tradition stretching back to 1982, the Diamond series has consistently delivered technology normally found at considerably higher price points, and the 12.0 is no exception: it incorporates Klarity cone technology, a sophisticated Linkwitz-Riley crossover, and Intelligent Spot Bracing cabinet construction developed for this generation of the range.
Klarity Cone Technology
The 100mm (4") bass/midrange driver features Wharfedale's Klarity cone — a mica-infused polypropylene diaphragm with moulded radial ribs that increase stiffness while reducing flexural resonance. The voice coil is wound on an epoxy/glass-fibre bobbin rather than the aluminium formers common at this price, providing superior rigidity and improved power handling. A critically tuned rear-ported bass-reflex enclosure works with the driver to extend bass response down to 65 Hz (–6 dB), offering deeper, more controlled low-frequency output than the cabinet volume alone might suggest. The low-damping surround is specifically tuned to aid bass quality and dynamic response.
Tweeter & Crossover
High frequencies are handled by a 25mm polyester dome tweeter treated with a high-loss damping coating to control breakup modes and reduce listening fatigue. The flat front plate minimises baffle diffraction, allowing the tweeter to contribute to a smoother, more extended high-frequency response. Crucially, the crossover network employs Linkwitz-Riley 24 dB/octave topology using air-core inductors — a component specification more typically associated with significantly more expensive loudspeakers. This topology ensures excellent driver phase alignment at the 2.7 kHz crossover point and low crossover-induced distortion.
Cabinet Construction
The enclosure is built from multi-layered sandwich panels to suppress cabinet-wall vibration. Internally, Intelligent Spot Bracing uses computer-modelled wooden braces connecting opposing walls at precisely calculated positions — an approach designed to reduce panel resonance more effectively than simple perimeter bracing, which can transfer vibration rather than absorb it. Cabinet volume is 4.4 litres.
Positioning Within the Diamond 12 Range
The Diamond 12.0 sits at the foot of the Diamond 12 series, which also includes the 12.1 (two-way bookshelf), 12.2 (larger two-way bookshelf), 12.3 (three-way floorstander), and 12.4 (larger floorstander), as well as a matching centre channel (12.C) and a dedicated 3D surround channel speaker. The 12.0's compact footprint — 264mm tall — makes it well-suited to smaller listening rooms, desktop systems, or as a high-performance surround channel in a home cinema installation using larger Diamond 12 models as the front array. Nominal impedance is 8 Ω (minimum 4 Ω), making it compatible with a wide range of integrated amplifiers with a power output of 20–60W per channel.
