Few acts defined the sound of late-1970s disco with the precision and elegance of Chic. Formed in New York City by guitarist and songwriter Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernard Edwards, Chic transformed the dancefloor with a unique blend of funk grooves, sophisticated arrangements, and impeccable production. Their influence extended far beyond the disco era: the bass riff of "Good Times" laid the foundation for hip-hop with The Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight," whilst Nile Rodgers went on to produce landmark albums for Diana Ross, David Bowie, Madonna, and Duran Duran. Les Plus Grands Succès De Chic: Chic's Greatest Hits collects the essential moments from one of the most consequential bands in popular music history.
About the Album
Released in December 1979 on Atlantic Records, Les Plus Grands Succès De Chic: Chic's Greatest Hits — the title translating from French as "Chic's Greatest Successes" — was the only compilation issued during the band's original six-year tenure with the label. Drawing from their three studio albums Chic (1977), C'est Chic (1978), and Risqué (1979), the record presents the band's commercial peak in a single listening experience. "Le Freak," inspired by a famous incident when Rodgers and Edwards were turned away from Studio 54 on New Year's Eve 1977, became Atlantic Records' best-selling single of all time. "Good Times," with its immortal eight-minute bass line, reached number one on both sides of the Atlantic. The album reached number 88 in the United States and number 30 in the UK, serving as the definitive introduction to one of disco's greatest catalogues.
